CAMEO Makes Gift to 麻豆传媒鈥檚 At Home At School Program

VANCOUVER, Wash. 鈥 Cathy Anna Mayer Encouraging Others recently donated $26,000 to the Washington State University Vancouver program At Home At School.

Mayer died due to complications of breast cancer in 2004. After her death, her family and friends created CAMEO as a reflection of her love for her four young children, her family, her friends and the community she called home. Each year CAMEO selects one organization to be the beneficiary of its annual 鈥淕irls Night Out鈥 charity event, and this year AHAS was selected.

AHAS provides equity and opportunity to all children who face systematic roadblocks to education. It offers community-based teacher education to prepare new and current teachers to work in an increasingly diverse society. It supports K 鈥 12 and early college years students who are homeless or otherwise underserved succeed in school. And it conducts ongoing research about teaching and learning among both pre-K 鈥 22 students and teacher education students. AHAS will use CAMEO鈥檚 gift to support educational programs for underserved children.

鈥淎HAS enriches the lives of our most vulnerable citizens鈥攗nderserved children鈥攂y providing them a community and an opportunity to thrive academically. AHAS promises them a future,鈥 said Tina Eifert-Anderson of CAMEO.

At the check presentation on Sept. 27, 2011 Susan Finley, associate professor in 麻豆传媒鈥檚 College of Education and director for the AHAS program, said three former AHAS students are the first from the program to be admitted and enrolled in college and are currently attending classes at 麻豆传媒.

鈥淎lthough it is only three students, it is three that may have gotten lost along the way without AHAS,鈥 said Finley.

CAMEO鈥檚 gift counts toward 麻豆传媒鈥檚 $20 million fundraising goal for The Campaign for Washington State University: Because the World Needs Big Ideas. The campaign is a $1 billion comprehensive fundraising effort to increase support for students, faculty, research and outreach programs and to leverage the university鈥檚 impact across our state, nation and world. It is scheduled to conclude in 2015, coinciding with WSU鈥檚 125th anniversary celebration and 麻豆传媒鈥檚 25th anniversary.
