VANCOUVER, Wash. 鈥 Graphic novelist Gina Siciliano will present two talks at 麻豆传媒 on Feb. 5. The talks begin at 12:05 and 1:30 p.m. in Dengerink Administration Building, Room 129 on campus. Both are free and open to the public.
Siciliano, a 2003 graduate of the Vancouver School for Arts and Academics, is the author of an award-winning book, 鈥淚 Know What I Am: The Life and Times of Artemisia Gentileschi.鈥 Gentileschi was an important woman artist in Italy鈥檚 Baroque era, as well as a single mother and sexual assault survivor. Siciliano鈥檚 book brings to life the tumultuous 17th-century cities of Rome, Florence, Naples and Venice and Gentileschi鈥檚 determination to succeed in what was then the male-dominated field of painting.
In the first lecture, 鈥淩esearching, Writing and Illustrating 鈥業 Know What I Am: The Life and Times of Artemisia Gentileschi,鈥欌 Siciliano will describe her seven-year journey of creating the illustrated biography and will explain how comics are the perfect medium for presenting educational nonfiction narratives and complex historical discourse.
In the second, 鈥淎rtemisia Gentileschi: A Woman Artist of the Baroque,鈥 she will discuss Gentileschi鈥檚 most important paintings along with insights from her biography.
These interdisciplinary lectures are cosponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and five individual programs: Art, Digital Technology and Culture, English, History, and Women鈥檚, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
