VANCOUVER, Wash. - Southwest Washington Math, Engineering and Science Achievement program will host its eighth annual MESA Day from 8:30 a.m. 鈥 3:30 p.m. March 24 at Clark College. The event is free and open to the public.
MESA provides enriching educational opportunities that help build a pathway to college and careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields for students. MESA鈥檚 goal is to reach students who are currently underrepresented in the STEM fields鈥擜frican American, Latino, Native American and girls. Southwest Washington MESA is housed at Washington State University Vancouver.
Middle and high school students from the Vancouver, Evergreen and Hockinson school districts will have the opportunity to showcase their design, problem-solving, mathematical and communication skills on a competitive basis during MESA Day. MESA Day expects to host 120 students this year.
"MESA Day is an exciting event for students. It is a great opportunity for them to showcase their hard work,鈥 said Armetta Burney, director of Southwest Washington MESA.
The main event will be the Wind Energy Challenge. Students have built wind devices designed to capture and use available wind energy to complete a set of defined tasks. They will demonstrate their devices, display their academic boards and give oral presentations. Students will also participate in a Math Olympiad and will take on several integrated engineering challenges.
The middle and high school Wind Energy Challenge winners will earn the opportunity to represent Southwest Washington MESA at the Washington State MESA Day Competition, which will be held at Microsoft in Seattle.
