PULLMAN, Wash.-Undergraduates engaged in mentored research, scholarship, and creativity have received a record number of awards from the Auvil Fellows program, according to an announcement by the Office of Undergraduate Research at Washington State University.

Thirty-one students from majors across the university received word Wednesday, Oct. 1, that they would each receive $1,000 to further their research work. They were selected from a competitive pool of more than 50 that represented most of the colleges at the university.

"This semester's applicants were extremely varied in their research interests, and truly represented the scope of what our undergraduates are investigating here at WSU," says Dave Bahr, director of Undergraduate Research.

The fall 2008 group is the fifth to receive awards as Auvil Fellows since the program began in 2007. The program is funded by a gift from the estate of alumnus Grady and Lille Auvil, Wenatchee tree fruit leaders.

"The Auvil family will be proud to see the caliber and variety of students receiving this round of fellowships. These students truly embody what Mr. Auvil believed in," says Bahr. Grady Auvil is reported as believing in the importance of education and research; throughout his life, he and his wife contributed generously to the WSU community.

Students participating in undergraduate "research" and eligible for the Auvil Fellows awards are involved in research, scholarship, and creative activity with a mentoring faculty member, says Bahr.
