麻豆传媒 English professor鈥檚 book comes to the stage

No Room of Her Own book coverVANCOUVER, Wash. 鈥 Desiree Hellegers is an associate professor of English at Washington State University Vancouver, an author and now a playwright. Two staged readings of a play based on her 2011 book 鈥淣o Room of Her Own: Women鈥檚 Stories of Homelessness, Life, Death and Resistance鈥 will come to life as part of Portland鈥檚 Fertile Ground Festival of New Plays.

The readings will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24 at Copeland Commons at Tabor Space, 5441 SE Belmont Street, Portland, OR 97215. Tickets are $10 in advance and may be purchased online at . Tickets are $15 at the door.

A staged reading involves more than sharing a script. It involves actors bringing a script to life, some stage movement and sometimes much more. 鈥淣o Room of Her Own鈥 will be performed as an augmented staged reading, infusing the performance with both sound and image.

鈥淣o Room of Her Own鈥 is a collaborative effort between Circle Theatre Project and Hellegers. Circle Theatre Project provides opportunities for women and girls in all aspects of professional theater and intends to bring 鈥淣o Room of Her Own鈥 to stage in full production in late spring 2015.

Drawing on oral history interviews, 鈥淣o Room of Her Own鈥 explores the experiences of 15 women who struggle to survive against seemingly insurmountable odds鈥攊ncluding catastrophic health issues and routine threats of violence鈥攚hile organizing to call attention to the routine deaths of homeless people on the streets of Seattle.
