VANCOUVER, Wash. – The economic crisis of 2008 may be in the past, but what does the history of American capitalism tell us about the cause? Leo Panitch, distinguished research professor of political science and senior Canada research chair at York University, Toronto, will delve into this question at Washington State University Vancouver from 1:30 – 2:40 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Multimedia Classroom building, room 6. The event is free and open to the public.

Co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the history program and the Center for Social and Environmental Justice, the event will explore the root causes of the 2007–2008 economic crisis. It will also examine how American capitalism has shaped the formation of the modern global capitalist system.

The discussion ties into Panitch’s most recent book, co-authored with Sam Ginden, “The Making of Global Capitalism,” which explores the centrality of the social conflicts that occur within states and how emerging faults have stalled the possibility of new political movements that would transform capitalist countries.

“We’re fortunate to be able to host Panitch, a distinguished Canadian scholar, at a time when globalization has appeared to be the natural outcome of an unstoppable process,” said Laurie Mercier, Johnson Distinguished Professor of History at �鶹��ý. “Panitch will explain the history of the intimate relationship between modern capitalism and the American state and help us understand the first major economic crisis of the 21st century, which has been deeply felt in all our lives and within the community.”

Panitch holds both a masters and a doctorate from the London School of Economics and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has co-authored numerous books, including “Global Capitalism and American Empire,” “The End of Parliamentary Socialism: From New Left to New Labour,” “Working-Class Politics in Crisis” and “From Consent to Coercion: The Assault on Trade Union Freedoms.” Panitch was for many years a regular on CBC television's “Face Off” and CBC Radio's “Commentary” and is currently a regular on “The Real News.” He is also the co-founder and a board member of Studies in Political Economy.
