This event, sparked by a raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, led to several days of protest involving LGBTQ+ individuals, including Black and Brown transgender and gender-nonconforming people.
While not the first moment of resistance, Stonewall is widely recognized as a turning point in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights. Earlier events—such as demonstrations at Compton’s Cafeteria in 1966 and the Black Cat Tavern in 1967—also reflected broader social tensions affecting LGBTQ+ communities.
Since that time, there have been significant turning points in the quest for equal rights for everyone, including LGBTQ+ individuals, advocates, and allies.
