May is Older Americans Month.
Established in 1963 by the Administration for Community Living, this month honors the contributions, wisdom and experiences of older adults. It recognizes the important roles seniors play in families, communities and society at large. At the time of this month’s founding, only a small percentage of Americans reached their 65th birthday, and almost a third of older Americans lived in poverty, with few programs to meet their needs.
Each year, a theme highlights key issues affecting older adults, such as health, connection and resilience. Communities organize events to celebrate seniors’ achievements and promote opportunities for engagement and support. Older Americans Month reminds us of the value of intergenerational connections and the importance of supporting policies that help older adults live full and active lives.
